Mangiferin (Mgf), a polyphenol obtained from Mangifera indica, has potential as a therapeutic for cancer and some neurodegenerative diseases. Indeed, it is already available in Cuba (as Vimang®) to combat issues associated with stress.
However, research is hampered by issues with the bioavailability of Mgf when administered orally. As such, it is of interest to develop a novel delivery system.
Taking steps in this arena, new research from Rajneet Kaur Khurana et al. at Panjab University (India) utilized GastroPlus™ software to better document the physiocochemical properties of Mgf.
The study sought to determine aqueous solubility, log P, Peff and ability to act as a P-gp substrate. Furthermore, characterization was performed via transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy and powder x-ray diffraction.
Commenting on the future consequences of the study, the authors note: "These reported data on physicochemical aspects of Mgf are likely to pave the way for effective development of potential nanostructured systems for investigating the mechanism(s) of drug interactions with biological macromolecules."
"Nevertheless, a lot of information still needs to be explored, especially [regarding] its biopharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic aspects."
