Novel anticancer drug family may be effective against melanoma

A new family of drugs has been developed by scientists at INSERM (Paris, France) that is effective against melanoma and displays no toxicity against healthy cells, indicating a new route for anticancer therapeutics.

Increasingly, anti diabetic drugs are shown to be useful for cancer therapeutics. This study as well as several reports and clinical trials show efficacy of an another diabetic drug, Metformin in variety of cancers. These results add credence to the concept of repurposed drugs. This study should provide a basis for rethinking drug discovery approaches. Understanding the pathways implicated in a drug's mechanism of action should open new indications for testing.
