I am very pleased to introduce this collection of chapters concerning the different uses of high-resolution MS (HRMS) applied to the drug-development workflow. HRMS has been growing at a rapid pace for the last couple of decades, allowing great breakthroughs to be achieved in all areas of drug discovery and development. What started as a technique available to very few laboratories worldwide has become the most sought-after method for complex analyses involving untargeted workflows. It has also recently shown promise as an interesting strategy for quantitative applications, especially in the cases of larger molecules. This book includes several areas of bioanalytical MS, from those involved in the elucidation of drug metabolites to quantifying biomolecules. In addition, untargeted workflows can aid in deciphering what biological changes are occurring upon drug treatment, for instance. One can even study a compound’s distribution in individual tissues by HRMS. It is clear that high-resolution mass analyzers are ideal for studying complex biological samples; for example, in assessing drug metabolism or bioavailability.
